This chap, Zosimo T Literatus sounds just like a character out of one of Dicken’s novels. Literatus after all reminds me of someone who is ‘well-read’. Well, if this is his real name, he will most certainly be well-read when people get to hear about his research, especially if the blonde pysllium husk does actually prove to be better than bran in helping IBS. We’ve been faithfully eating bran for years, and while it does help, it’s not the all-cure. I’d like to see some more proof of this before I chuck my regular diet and run the risk of having another painful flare-up.

Many people forget that there’s a soft side to roughage in the diet. When we think about fiber, bowls of bran cereal come to mind, along with whole wheat bread, dense, grainy muffins and assorted edible sticks and twigs.

Well, TBH, that’s what I though the word ‘roughage’ meant. I was under the impression that roughage consisted of the bits in the food which stayed more or less whole all the way through the system. I also thought that because of the way the stomach and the intestines work (i.e. those natural contraction movements that they have) the larger pieces of whole roughage made it possible for the contractions to push it all along the inside of the gut. I suppose if it were all hard, we’d all have a terrible problem wouldn’t we?

Isn’t it always amazing how most of the words we use can always be linked back to old French or Anglo-Saxon origins? It is a source of never-ending mystery for me. What amazes me even more is that fact that when I read some of the foreign languages, I can understand what is being said – simply because I know the source of a lot of the words. What isn’t terribly complimentary is that a person who is slack at their job is called ‘lax’…
I’m not too sure I would want to be associated with a laxative!

Psyllium – as in husks? I have always used bran to help my condition. It works, and so long as I keep it going in regularly, I don’t have that much of a problem. I must say I feel a bit cynical about the psyllium husks being the best though, it may make people overuse it, and there’s a danger in that – too much psyllium husk in your diet is supposed to cause you to develop polyps in your lower bowels which can turn cancerous! I think maybe I’ll stick with the bran for a bit longer, myself.

Until today I had never heard of Manuka honey! I just googled it and it comes from New Zealand. The bees make it from the pollen of the manuka plants, and they say that it is used for all types of medicinal reasons, including Irritable Bowl Syndrome. I’m always suspicious of most things like this that are supposed to be the wonder-solution, but honey is one of those things I could accept. I’d have to try it first though before I say anything. Has anyone else tried it yet? Is it worth going for?
